Occidental General Manager Travis Gray has a rich education in wine spanning more than 30 years that began with his first job at Trellis in Williamsburg, Virginia. The integrity of the wine program was a priority for Trellis, and Gray was only too happy to learn the ropes and launch his career. Gray came up under the tutelage of some of Virginia’s best and brightest, and it was there he learned to recognize and appreciate good food and good wine, and most importantly, how to successfully pair the two.

Occidental General Manager Travis Gray has a rich education in wine spanning more than 30 years that began with his first job at Trellis in Williamsburg, Virginia. The integrity of the wine program was a priority for Trellis, and Gray was only too happy to learn the ropes and launch his career. Gray came up under the tutelage of some of Virginia’s best and brightest, and it was there he learned to recognize and appreciate good food and good wine, and most importantly, how to successfully pair the two. 

After six years at Trellis as bar and dining room manager, Gray moved on, taking advantage of a unique opportunity to work at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts restaurant, where he brought together his love of food, fine wine, and art. The museum hosted many large receptions, and Gray was able to use his extensive wine knowledge to make each event unforgettable. 

After a stint at the Davis and Main Restaurant in Richmond, Virginia, where he assumed his first general manager duties, Gray arrived in DC as manager and wine buyer for Equinox, a long-standing Washington fine-dining establishment with an award-winning wine program and reputation for excellence. Here, Gray spent 12 years overseeing operations while managing a carefully hand-picked 200-bottle list.

Gray joined Occidental in 2013 taking over day-to-day operations at the historic restaurant. Occidental is home to a wine list nearly double the size of that at Equinox and Gray is completely in his element managing an award-winning wine program that includes bottles from all around the world. 

Thrilled to be at a restaurant with such a long and storied history as Occidental’s, Gray has embraced his position and thinks of the restaurant like a home away from home. His years of hospitality experience and broad knowledge of food and wine combine for an enjoyable and memorable dining experience for guests of Occidental.
